WELLNESS & BEAUTY IN SLOVENIA

La Slovenia è una terra di mezzo: un passaggio obbligato tra l’Italia e il mare trasparente della Croazia. Ma è anche una terra verde, ricca di boschi e piccoli ruscelli, e soprattutto di zone termali.

E’ con curiosità che ci si appresta a questa regione appena al di là dei nostri confini ma ancora poco di moda tra i turisti italiani, e quindi ancora molto tranquilla.

Slovenia is a middle earth, a compulsory stop when you travel from Italy to the blue and transparent sea of Croatia. Anyway, if you take a break to look at it, it is a green region, full of woods and small rivers, and above all of thermal areas.

It is with curiosity that we enter in this land, just beside our borders, but still not considered a destination “à la page”, and for this reason there is still the possibility to spend a quiet time there.

La nostra destinazione è Maribor: città storica, capitale della cultura nel 2012, conosciuta per le sue vette dagli amanti dello sci, che offre anche ai meno sportivi rilassanti break alle terme. Una città di fiume, una delle mie passioni: è attraversata dal fiume Drava, sulle cui sponde affollate di cigni si specchiano le architetture in stile medievale.

Our final destination is Maribor: a big town with its important history, which is known for its mountains from ski lovers, but which offers at the same time  a relaxing break in the thermal areas even for people who is not so fond of sports. Its life flows together which its river, the Drava, enliven by lots of swallows, which is a perfect mirror for the medieval palaces.

E’ piacevole passeggiare nel centro storico, dalla piazza con il municipio medievale alla cattedrale gotica, fino al castello di Maribor, senza dimenticare di dare uno sguardo alla città da uno dei ponti sul fiume.

A stroll in then historic centre can be really a pleasure: from the medieval architecture of the city hall, to the gothic cathedral, and then the Maribor castle, without missing a glance of the town from one of the main bridges overwhelming the river.

Ma la bellezza del soggiorno è legata ai due giorni spesi alle terme. L’Hotel Habakuk, immerso nel verde, sicuramente soddisfa ogni desiderio. Stanze ampie, ristorante di buon livello, una piscina ricca di getti idromassaggio e una zona saune curata e rilassante. Il plus dell’hotel è sicuramente il piccolo angolo ristorante direttamente in piscine: permette di pranzare in accappatoio, senza dover recarsi in camera per cambiarsi, e la scelta del menù è varia e di ottimo livello.

Sicuramente una bella idea per un weekend di relax.

It is undeniable that what excited me at most is the time spent at the Habakuk Hotel, in the middle of woods and meadows. Large rooms, good food and beverage, whirlpools, thermal water baths and relaxing sauna. What I liked most is the small bar/restaurant next to the swimming pool. You can have lunch in your bathrobe, without wasting time returning to the your room to dress up, and the menu is really reach and it offers tasty meals.

For sure, this is a good option if you need to spend a relaxing weekend.

In these days, with the latest winter phenomena, the images of the heat and light inside the Sagrada Familia come to my mind, as a recall of a trip in Barcelona in August. A charming and shining light, a world full of colors that it is not possible to describe with simple words, only eyes can speak about that light…

Un viaggio nella scienza…

Milano è conosciuta sicuramente per il Duomo e le sue guglie, per il Teatro La Scala e la sua piazza, per l’atmosfera retro-chic che si respira all’interno della Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. Ma vale sicuramente la pena sfruttare la presenza in città di musei di altissimo livello.

Il Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci offre la possibilità di passare una domenica divertendosi e nello stesso tempo facendo un pò lavorare gli ingranaggi del nostro cervello, arrugginito dalle mille procudure tutte uguali, da automa, che svolgiamo tutti i giorni alla nostra scrivania…

Milan is universally known for its Cathedral, for the La Scala Theatre and its place, for the retro-chic atmosphere of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. But it is absolutely worth to visit the great number of high quality museums of the city.

The Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci is a nice occasion to spend a Sunday afternoon having fun and at the same time letting our brain finally work on something more involving than the usual activities in our office.

Dalla storia dei trasporti, con i primi treni a vapore e gli esempi di trasporti in città, alla storia del volo; dalle grandi navi che hanno solcato gli oceani alle nuove navi di oggi, che solcano lo spazio e aprono nuove frontiere nella conoscenza dell’uomo.

The history of transports, from the oldest trains of the 19th century to the old city transports; from the great transatlantic ships which travelled in the huge oceans, to the ships travelling in the Space, which break old boundaries of human knowlegde.

Un’avventura affascinante non solo per i bambini, ma anche per gli adulti. Un modo per capire la storia della nostra società e dello sviluppo delle nostre economie. Oggetti ed elementi che per noi oggi appaiono scontati vengono studiati dall’origine: dal primo pianoforte alla storia delle telecomunicazioni, dal primo telefono alla macchina di Turing, fino al moderno pc.

A fascinating adventure not only for children, but also for adults. A way to explore the history of our society and the development of our economic system. Objects which for us are common and which we can study from their origin: from the history of the piano to telecommunications, from the first phones to Turing’s machine till the modern pc.

Sicuramente vale la pena acquistare insieme all’entrata al museo anche il biglietto per visitare il sottomarino Enrico Toti. La sua dimensione esterna è notevole, e una serie di foto racconta come è stato possibile trasportare il sottomarino e la sua mole dalla Sicilia a Milano. All’interno sembra incredibile che in uno spazio così ridotto abbiano trovato spazio 25 persone.

Together with the entrance to the museum, it is possible to buy the ticket to visit also the Enrico Toti. It is really huge when you look at it from outside, and interesting images show how difficult it was to move it from Sicily to the centre of Milan. But when you enter in the submarine, than it seems incredible that inside this small space there were 25 people sleeping, eating and working together, 24 hours a day.

Ed infine, una piacevole sorpresa: il sottomarino oggi è la dimora di un bel gattone nero, che dorme tranquillo sullo stesso lettino che ha raccolto fino a pochi anni fa le lacrime di nostalgia di giovani marinai che pensavano alle loro famiglie lontane.

And finally, a nice surprise: the submarine today is home for a cat, which today sleeps on the same beds where soldiers cried for the whole night thinking of their families only 30 years ago.

Il museo oggi è in piena evoluzione, nuovi allestimenti e nuove aree sono in fase di allestimento in occasione di Expo 2015, e la visita ne risente, complice la scarsa segnaletica per orientarsi nella moltitudine di sale.

Un consiglio è sicuramente quello di seguire il personale di servizio per chiedere informazioni, e soprattutto meglio organizzarsi con un pranzo al sacco: non c’è un bar all’interno del museo, solo un punto ristoro con dei distributori automatici di patatine e biscotti. Non certo l’ideale per recuperare le energie e ricominciare la visita nelle nuove aree dedicate alla storia dell’energia o al ciclo dei rifiuti.

Today the museum is under restoration: new areas are being set up with the occasion of Expo 2015, and this make the visit even more difficult, since the signage is not so helpful.

It could be useful to look for the staff, so to ask for indications to reach the different areas, but above all it is important to have a sandwich for lunch, since there is no bar or restaurant inside the museum, just few machines distributing chips and biscuits. Not the perfect solution to recover before continuing the visit in the new sectors dedicated to the history of Energy or to the process involving garbage.

Un viaggio nella Vienna imperiale

Vienna nel periodo natalizio e di fine d’anno ti sorprende con le sue luci e con la sua musica, presente ovunque in città. Non esiste altro luogo in cui nei sotterranei della metropolitana nella notte di capodanno alcuni ragazzi un po’ brilli intonano la marcia di Radetzky invece delle solite canzonette un po’ sconce a cui siamo abituati noi italiani. E che dire dell’entusiasmo con cui i viennesi seguono nei maxischermi della città, con temperature di molto sotto lo zero, il concerto di capodanno e battono le mani a tempo di musica?

Wien during Christmas time is always stunning. It welcomes you with its lights and its music, in all the different corners of the town. There is no other place where during the New Year’s Eve you can listen at some guys, a bit drunk, singing the Radetzky motif in the tube. And what about the people in Wien, listening at the New Year’s concert in front of the maxi-screens in the centre of the town, with a freezing temperature, and clapping according to the music of the symphonic orchestra?

Il tour di Vienna comincia dalla sua storia imperiale, che si può ritrovare nella Kapuzinergruft, il luogo dove riposano tutti gli esponenti della corte imperiale viennese. Può sembrare un punto di inizio un po’ macabro, ma sicuramente fa molto effetto vedere la cura con cui i viennesi tutelano il luogo, dove dal 1633 riposano gli imperatori della casa d’Asburgo e delle case nobiliari imparentate con gli Asburgo. E non può lasciare indifferenti il numero di fiori che onorano Elisabetta, la leggendaria Sissi, ed il marito, l’imperatore Francesco Giuseppe, a testimoniare l’affetto per il proprio passato che ancora oggi caratterizza Vienna. L’ingresso, a pagamento, è a lato della Kapuziner Kirche nel centro storico di Vienna.

The tour in Wien starts in the Kapuzinergruft, where the major emperors and empresses and queens of the former Habsburg dynasty have been laid to rest since 1633. It may seem a bit dark perspective to start visiting the city, but no doubt on the affection of Wien in taking care of this space. And it is to note the number of flowers giving homage to Elizabeth, worldwide known as Sissi, and to her husband, Kaiser Franz Wilhelm. The entrance is by the Kapuziner Kirche in the historic centre.

Imperdibile la visita al Duomo di Santo Stefano, l’edificio barocco più importante dell’Austria, con le sue meraviglie architettoniche e il Pummerin, la più grande campana austriaca. Stephansplatz è il luogo principale per una visita al centro storico di Vienna, una pausa ai mercatini, uno sguardo alle sue chiese, come la Peterskirche e la Karlskirche, e un passaggio davanti al vecchio palazzo imperiale, imponente per la bellezza e la maestosità degli edifici.

Not to be misssed the visit to Stephansdom, the baroque cathedral with its pieces of art and the Pummerin, the greatest bell in Austria. Stepharnsplatz is also the best place to start visiting the historic centre of Wien, to stop at the Christmas markets or in one of the nice churches of the city, like the Peterskirche and the Karlskirche. It si very interesting to visit also the old Imperial Court, which is beautiful and huge.

I castelli del Belvedere furono fatti costruire nel diciottesimo secolo come residenza estiva dal principe Eugenio di Savoia, che ne affidò la realizzazione ad uno degli architetti più straordinari del Barocco, Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt. Il castello con i suoi giardini è uno dei più interessanti esempi di Barocco nel mondo. Imperdibile la collezione di Gustav Klimt in esposizione al Belvedere Superiore, con il bellissimo Il Bacio. Molto interessante anche l’esposizione di opere di Claude Monet al Belvedere Inferiore.

The Belvedere has been built in the 18th century as a request by Eugenio di Savoia, who involved in the project one of the best Baroque architect of the period, Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt. Tha castle and its gardens are a wonderful expression of the Baroque art. Not to be missed the important collection of Gustav Klimt’s works at the Superior Belvedere, with the beautiful The Kiss. It is also interesting to visit Claude Monet’s exhibition at the Inferior Belvedere.

Senza parole lascia naturalmente Schönbrunn. Un capolavoro di arte barocca nel mezzo di parchi stupendi, dove vale la pena trascorrere una giornata visitando le sale aperte al pubblico nell’ambito di un “Grand Tour con audioguida”.

Il castello di Schönbrunn, ex residenza estiva della famiglia imperiale, è uno dei più bei complessi barocchi d’Europa. Gli Asburgo ne acquisirono la proprietà a fine 1500; nel 1642 la consorte dell’imperatore Ferdinando II fece edificare sull’area una residenza di campagna estiva e chiamò per la prima volta la tenuta “Schönbrunn”. Il castello e il parco sono stati ampiamente rimaneggiati sotto l’imperatrice Maria Teresa. Gli Asburgo risiedevano per la maggior parte dell’anno negli innumerevoli appartamenti di cui una grande famiglia imperiale aveva bisogno accanto alle sale di rappresentanza.

L’imperatore Francesco Giuseppe visse in questo castello con la moglie, Sissi, e trascorse i suoi ultimi anni di vita solo nel castello. Due anni dopo la sua morte, nel 1918, il castello passò all’amministrazione della repubblica appena fondata e da allora viene considerato, sia per il suo valore storico che per la sua splendida posizione e per il magnifico allestimento architettonico, una delle attrazioni principali di Vienna.

A visit  to Schönbrunn Leaves any one without words. This baroque complex contains an enchanting park, the Palm House, the Gloriette and a zoo. It is Worth spending a day visiting the imperial rooms with the “Grand Tour with Audio Guide”.

Schönbrunn Palace, the former summer residence of the imperial family, is one of Europe’s most impressive Baroque palace complexes. The land had been in the possession of the Habsburgs since the end of 1500, when the wife of Emperor Ferdinand II. had a summer residence built there in 1642, which she called “Schönbrunn”. The palace and garden complex were redesigned from the ground up by Maria Theresia For most of the year, the Habsburgs resided in the countless chambers that a large imperial family needed in addition to the formal state rooms.

Emperor Franz Joseph, who later married the enchanting Sisi and reigned from 1848 to 1916, spent his last years entirely in the palace, which became the property of the new Republic of Austria only two years after his death. Today, the palace is part of UNESCO’s cultural heritage due to its historic importance, its unique grounds and its splendid furnishings.

Ultima parte del tour, una visita alla Vienna moderna. La Hundertwasserhaus (Casa di Hundertwasser) di Vienna è una delle principali attrazioni architettoniche dell’Austria. Il complesso di edifici progettati da Friedensreich Hundertwasser attira visitatori da tutto il mondo grazie alle sue forme originali ed ai suoi colori accesi. Più di 200 alberi e arbusti sui balconi e sulle terrazze sul tetto fanno della Hundertwasserhaus un’oasi verde nel cuore della città.

Last part of the tour is dedicated to modern architecture in Wien. The Hundertwasser House in Vienna is one of Austria’s architectural highlights. The house designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser draws visitors from around the world thanks to its original forms and its colours. More than 200 trees and shrubs on the balconies and roof terraces make the Hundertwasser House a green oasis in the heart of the city. The Hundertwasser House can only be viewed from outside.

Un ultimo colpo d’occhio alla città dalla ruota panoramica del Prater, che soprattutto nei giorni di Natale si trasforma in un vero e proprio parco divertimenti.

A last glimpse on the city from the panoramic wheel of the Prater, which is a real amusement pak, especially in the Christmas period.

Alcuni “tips” che ho annotato in questo soggiorno. Innanzitutto, è importante avere un hotel in ottima posizione. L’hotel Ananas – Austria Trend sulla linea verde, a sole due fermate di metro da Karlsplatz, consente un ottimo soggiorno a ottimi prezzi.

Per il cibo, nel periodo invernale i mercatini con il classico wurst con crauti è un’ottima opzione. In alternativa, a me è piacito tantissimo provare la tipica cucina viennese in due ristoranti piccoli ma di ottima qualità  buon prezzo. Al Restaurant Ferdinandt ottimo il Tafelspitz, carne lessa con verdure, mentre al Huth Gastwirtshaft ottima la cotoletta viennese e il cordon bleu con impanatura casalinga.

Un capitolo a parte meritano i dolci, Da non perdere la Sacher originale della Sacher House (andate nell’osteria laterale, meno coda  e la Sacher è comunque ottima). E per lo strudel, non perdetevi quello del café di Schönbrunn, una vera delizia.

A special note for desserts. You can not miss the original Sacher of the Sacher House, even if you can skip the queue and enter the lateral café. For the Apfelstrudel, the best is the one of the Schönbrunn café: simply delightful!

Wien, auf wiedersehen!

Un viaggio d’amore / Love journey

E’ stato il Viaggio dei viaggi.

Una giovanissima ragazza, incinta del suo primo figlio, segue il marito in un viaggio alla sua città natale per procedere al censimento della sua famiglia.

E con un pancione enorme, stanca e affaticata da ormai nove mesi di gravidanza, la giovane moglie intraprende il suo viaggio, il più difficile della sua giovane vita, a dorso di un mulo che ad ogni sobbalzo le procura forti dolori.

E poi d’improvviso, quando è sera e comincia a fare freddo, un dolore più forte, che non passa, ma diventa sempre più insostenibile. Sta per perdere i sensi, si accascia sul mulo che ignaro continua il suo percorso a balzi.

Il marito subito si ferma, e corre da un alloggio all’altro, da una casa di accoglienza all’altra, ma non ci sono letti per loro, per una giovane mamma che sta per partorire il suo primo figlio.

E così, le doglie la colgono in una stalla, sdraiata su un letto di paglia, con l’odore degli animali ed il loro respiro a darle i tempi per le spinte…

E il bimbo nasce, è un bimbo bellissimo e sano, e lei per tenerlo al caldo lo avvolge nei suoi abiti e lo tiene vicino agli animali per scaldarlo con il loro fiato.

Il suo viaggio si conclude con il più bel dono che la vita possa fare ad una donna, la gioia di un figlio. E subito la donna, al vedere l’accorrere di pastori che si inginocchiano davanti al suo piccolo, capisce che questa nascita è un dono per l’umanità intera.

E’ la Natività, la Nascita di Gesù.

It has been the symbol of all journeys.

A young woman, waiting for her first child, follows her husband in a journey to his village, where he has to register the whole family.

And with her baby bump, tired after almost nine months of pregnancy, she sits on the mule, and the journey begings, with up-and-down movements causing her pain.

Suddenly, when it is almost night and cold, the pain becomes intolerable, no more pause but a real torment, and the young woman almost faints.

Her husband runs from one hostel to the other, looking for a room and asking for help, but there is no bed free for a young woman who is giving life to her first child.

And so, the labor pains occur in a poor stable. The young woman lays down on a straw bed, with the smell of the animals and their breath giving her the right sequence for hers.

And finally, she can embrace her wonderful baby. To keep him warm, she wraps him in her dresses and she puts him near the animals, so that they can heat the child with their breath.

That journey ends with the most important event for a woman, the birth of a baby. But for that woman, who looks at shepherds coming to honor her child, it is suddenly clear that this birth is a present to mankind.

It is the Nativity, Jesus’ Birth.

All’inizio di ogni nuova avventura mi prende sempre un pò di ansia…e così da giorni mi chiedo: quale il modo migliore per cominciare questo viaggio?

E la risposta più ovvia mi è sembrata proprio il Viaggio…un viaggio per immagini, attraverso le più belle foto delle metropoli del mondo nel periodo di Natale, quando anche la più grigia e fredda città ritrova la sua anima, diventa viva, e meno ostile.

Potere delle luci, della musica, della frenesia degli ultimi acquisti e dei mille pacchetti che corrono come impazziti tra i portici e le vie…ma soprattutto potere della gente, e dell’immaginazione di chi queste città le vive.

Starting any new adventure, I am always fighting against fear and panic…this is why I have been spending the last days wondering on how to start this trip in the best way.

And the most obvious answer has been: Traveling. Traveling through images, through the most beautiful pictures taken in the greatest cities during Christmas time, when event the most anonymous and grey city turns to life, showing its human side.

All this thanks to lights, to the craziness of the Christmas shopping and of the thousands of presents wandering through the main streets…but above all thanks to people, and to the imagination of those who live in these cities.
